AJT Project: Fuse Laboratory

Project director: Eng. Marinela Petrescu (ICMET Craiova)

General data of the investment project

  • Project title: Low voltage laboratory for testing fuses according to EU directive 73/23 EEC and European standard EN 60269-4
  • Acronym: AJT (CEEX Contract Module IV C202 / 10.08.2006)
  • Program: CEEX – Research of Excellence
  • Project category: Module IV – P-CONFORM
  • Period: 10.08.2006 – 30.01.2008
  • Total amount: 670,000 lei
  • State budget: 500,000 lei
  • Co-financing: 170,000 lei

Authorities and responsibilities

  • Contracting Authority: Romanian Accreditation Association – RENAR Bucharest.
  • Main contractor: ICMET Craiova.
  • Direct leadership: Engineer Marinela Petrescu.
  • Thematic area: Knowledge for the energy policy development process.

Main objectives of the AJT project

The major objective is the accreditation of specific tests for low voltage fuses. These technical tests have been strongly requested by various manufacturers in Romania. They are currently not sufficiently covered nationally by other laboratories. The final measurable objective is the accreditation certificate obtained directly from the RENAR body.

The following strict tests and verifications are proposed for accreditation:

  • Accurate heating test of fuses under normal load conditions.
  • Correct verification of the power dissipated in the actual load of the fuses.
  • Detailed verification of the complex time-current characteristic for each individual fuse.

Development and accreditation stages

Stage I (Year 2006)

Activity: Low voltage laboratory execution documentation for testing fuses.
Period: 10.08.2006 – 20.11.2006
Total amount: 80,000 lei

Stage II (Year 2007)

Activity: Practical implementation of the low voltage laboratory for fuse testing.
Period: 21.11.2006 – 20.05.2007
Total amount: 430,000 lei

Stage III (Year 2007)

Activity: Test circuit performance and validation of low voltage fuses.
Period: 21.05.2007 – 20.09.2007
Total amount: 105,000 lei

Stage IV (Year 2008)

Activity: Official accreditation of the laboratory according to the EU directive and the standards in force.
Period: 21.09.2007 – 30.01.2008
Total amount: 55,000 lei

Technical impact and economic opportunities

The importance of rigorous testing

From a technical point of view, the laboratory offers optimal conditions for the development of devices. After the design phase, the testing phase is absolutely and imperatively necessary. In this step, all the qualities and defects of a product are precisely identified. We eliminate major safety risks in the field in advance.

Access to the European single market

For Romanian companies, it is an impossible luxury to develop their own laboratories. The existence of independent testing bases is vital for small and medium-sized companies. Without official test reports, the European CE safety mark cannot be attached. Without this mark, it is completely impossible to penetrate the vast EU market.

Social development and jobs

The potential users are primarily the ICMET Craiova employees involved in testing. We strongly address all local manufacturers of low voltage fuses.

The existence of this laboratory really and logistically supports absolutely all local economic agents. They thus produce saleable goods that allow them to further develop and expand their range. This directly means new investments, modern jobs and much better salaries. We have an extremely positive social impact on the entire Romanian society.
